    Customer Reviews:
  • The Voice of Christmas
Few voices sound as much like Christmas as Johnny Mathis. His "Sleigh Ride" is the vocal version of this holiday standard, and his "Silver Bells" takes you back to the "busy sidewalks" of your hometown, filled with happy shoppers, Salvation Army bellringers and department store Santas. The new Gold: A 50th Anniversary Christmas Celebration collects recordings from several of Mathis' seasonal outings dating back to his first in 1958. The early stuff is essential, the latter day work still strong and emotion-inducing, and a new duet with Bette Midler on a mix'n'match medley of "Winter Wonderland" and "Let it Snow" has the same timeless feel that permeates much of the rest of this CD.

  • Familar Songs, Different Arrangements and Mature Vocal Quality
Agree with all reviewers' comments ...except...

Anyone who knows Johnny's voice since Ed Sullivan days...he has kept his octaves but expanded his tonal quality. The current album has different arrangements...elicits different emotions in listeners.

Tracks on this CD are same titles from previous...but have qualities described above.

It's interesting that people will spend $10+ per ticket to go to a movie theatre with the loud audio, rude people using their cell phones, cost of popcorn, etc.........why would there be a complaint about spending the $$$ for this CD?

Johnny Mathis has contributed to the USA culture. I hope the current and future generations develop appreciation for artists regardless of generation.

  • Quite a disappointment...
I must agree with the reviewer from Oklahoma. What a disappointment it is to see a 50th anniversary Christmas album from one of the greatest ambassadors of Christmas that gives us little that's new. I'm still waiting for a recording of a Christmas song that he sang and was only broadcast on Los Angeles radio stations twenty-some years ago called "Christmas in the City of the Angels." It was a wonderful song that for some reason never made it to any of his wonderful Christmas albums.

  • Christmas is Mathis Magical
This 50th Anniversary Christmas Celebration is a wonderful collection of Mathis masterpieces. It does not matter whether a song was recorded today or 30 years ago, when that song is performed to perfection. That is definitely the case here. Each song has Johnny Mathis' unique touch which makes them his own. I especially love O Holy Night and Silent Night which are so spirtual. Then hearing him sing It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year gets the whole family singing. Christmas in my house is not complete unless Johnny Mathis is playing loud and clear. Thank you Johnny Mathis for your continued gift of your Beautiful voice. I wish you and everyone a Wonderful Wonderful Christmas!

  • 50 Years of Johnny Mathis Christmas Music
The name of Johnny Mathis is so synonymous with the Christmas Season, that he could easily be called The Voice of Christmas. This CD is basically a 50th Anniversary compilation, a reflection, a collection, of some of the Classic Christmas songs that Johnny Mathis has released over the 50 years of his recording career. (To include them all would take at least a 6-CD Box Set.) There are 2 exceptions, the duet with Bette Midler 2006, and the track with Mannheim Steamroller 2001. Starting with the songs that are included on this CD from Johnny's first Christmas album, MERRY CHRISTMAS of 1958 ... to the songs that are from his THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM of 2002 ... each song is a unique example of his beautiful voice singing a Christmas song in a style, in a rendition, that is without equal. This CD captures the Johnny Mathis Christmas artistry that has endured for an incomparable 50 years. The musical memories of 6 decades of a Johnny Mathis Christmas are here to enjoy, to dream upon, to sparkle the Holidays, for both adults and children, for a wonderful, wonderful always!
