The gameplay is focused on a fire team co-op so advanced that your A.I. teammates are indiscernible from human players. Voice recognition and real-time lip synching heighten the absorbing experience. The Unreal Engine 3 technology brings out the smallest details in the largest of battles. With GOW you're sure to experience a rich, dynamic world where characters spring to life. Speaking of life, the battlefield is a lethal place. To survive, you must suppress your enemy with blindfire, take cover in interactive environments, and use weapons and teammates to outwit your dreaded, inhuman foes. And with a title like GOW, it would be shame if you couldn't get online and challenge live gamers. With the next-generation of Xbox Live, you'll be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize games, and build personalized gamer profiles.

Gears of War shined bright at Microsoft's pre-E3 press briefing, but a deeper demo at Microsoft's E3 booth revealed many of the game's mechanics. GOW is built with both the hardcore and casual gamer in mind. But, instead of selecting a difficulty level at the start of the game, GOW offers a choice at the beginning of each level. In the vein of choose your own adventure, you can select between a difficult or easy path. And it's not just a simple choice of battling tougher enemies; each path (explained by a comrade) represents additional content that is crucial to the storyline. After easing your way into the experience of the gameplay with the simpler paths, you can go back and test your skills on the more difficult routes and never feel like you've played through the areas before.

Standing around in the open is likely to get you killed in GOW. You must use cover to survive. With a context sensitive A button function, you won't have to sweat memorizing cumbersome button combos. The A button will:

    • Slam you into cover. As you approach cover in GOW simply tap the A button to slide and make immediate use of cover.
    • Vault you over the cover. Once you're in cover, pressing up and A will vault you over your cover to engage the opponent or next cover opportunity.
    • Evade enemy fire. When you're forced to be out in the open, tapping the A button will engage a roll maneuver to evade enemy fire.
    • Activate a "Swat Turn." When taking cover on the side of a doorway, pressing the A button will spin your character from one side of the doorway to the other, helping avoid fire.
Ripping a magazine free and replacing it in the midst of bloody combat is no easy task. GOW simulates this difficult action by forcing you to perfect your reloading skills. To be effective in combat you'll need to allot for time to successfully reload your weapon. Do it well and the battle is yours; do it poorly and you may actually jam your gun. Time it perfectly and you'll earn a bonus with a temporary damage boost. Though GOW clearly showcases a sci-fi experience, its roots are in tactical, realistic combat scenarios. Therefore, running and gunning makes for seriously erratic shooting. Think about what you're doing. Unless wasting ammo is your goal, you better stop, aim, shoot, and then move on. Otherwise, the Locust Horde might swarm you and take your life.

Gears of War presents a focused and well-paced cinematic experience, and nothing ruins that faster than a time-consuming exploration of every switch or button to find the elusive trigger to open a door. This game introduces a "point of interest" button that comes up on the screen so you can immediately interact with the necessary item to move forward in your gameplay. GOW certainly offers drool-worthy graphics, but the mechanics have also received equal attention. Keep your eyes and ears on high alert for a release date, as Microsoft hasn't let the cat out of the bag on when gamers will be able to tackle this great-looking and great-playing title.

  • best 360 game yet
i've been playing video games all my life, starting with the orignal nintendo all the way through the ps3 now. if you like halo or halo 2 then you'll love this game. i have to say this is one of if not the best game i've ever played. at first i thought all the talk of this being the best game for next gen consoles was all b/s.. but i was wrong. if youre getting one game for an xbox 360 this should be it. the campaign mode is very good, but my favorite part is the xbox live experience on this game. very addicting indeed. the graphics are superb. this is probably the only game i've played worth 60 dollars.

  • Best Game EVER
Why would I say this? Well, it is safe to say that Gears of War revolutionized the way shooters are played, and puts most of them in shame. The reality is jaw dropping, gameplay could not have been better. I HIGHLY recommend this game to ANY 360 OWNER! It is an experience, and it is making history I am sure. Graphics are uncomparable to ANYTHING, anywhere, as of now. I refuse to believe any that say it has destroyed their xbox's, mine works perfectly squared. Maybe they played it too much causing it to be damaged. Anyhow, the way you play is like nothing out there, changing the face of gameplay everywhere. I would not be surprised if it does better than the Halo series... I tried to play Halo after this and well... Let's just say I refuse to play any other game as of now, I can feel it ruining my life.

  • An objective opinion on Gears of War (for once)
This is quite possibly the most over-hyped game of all time. As a cross between Killswitch, Black, and Halo, this 3rd-person shooter doesn't attempt to be anything new or revolutionary. The story is passable, but certainly not original. The characters are unintelligible, emotionless cavemen with huge guns and a penchant for unnecessary swearing. Finally, the gameplay is completely unoriginal and uninspired. Granted, there are some interesting diversions from the standard (albeit mind-numbing) point-and-shoot gameplay, but be prepared for about a dozen hours of unloading thousands upon thousands of rounds into sameish, unremarkable enemy monsters through various cliched industrial, metropolitan, and gothic environments.

The aesthetic aspects of this game are actually quite impressive...as long as you're standing still. There's an almost obtrusive amount of painstaking detail that went into crafting the amazing environments, yet sadly none of it is interactive. Sure, little chunks of texture appear when you shoot buildings and pavement, but all the windows, light bulbs, and street lamps in the game are all completly bulletproof. And has anybody actually played this game before reviewing it? Not a single reviewer has mentioned how disjointed and jerky the animations are. When your character goes to leap over the blockade he was hiding behind, the animation should flow in such a way that gives the impression that the character does, in fact, actually have some mass. Instead, the character moves like a beleaguered dinosaur while on foot, but he looks more akin to a chipmunk on crack during reloading or transitioning to and from cover. Little things like terrain-mapping a character's feet and motion-captured animation go a long way towards player immersion in a 3rd-person action game.

The sound is excellent - there's no arguing that. The gunfire isn't at all realistic, but it definitely suits the style of the game. Sound effects are mixed perfectly and nothing is too loud or too quiet. However, the quality of the voice acting is to be expected (i.e. not good), and the dialogue is extremely juvenile...but I guess that should just be assumed given the subject matter.

Lastly, the cooperative modes are a nice addition, and do add to the replayability of the game. The addition of another player makes for some fun moments, but the gameplay essentially remains unchanged. In Gears of War, adding a second player does as much to augment the gameplay as it did in 8-bit Contra, which is to say it makes it easier and not much else. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory made tremendous strides in cooperative gameplay -- a co-op level in that game would be nearly unplayable with a single player simply because that game allows you to do so much more with a friend aside from telling him where to aim. Ironically, a game like Gears of War that has been toted as being completely cooperative doesn't really provide much in the way of gameplay options by adding a friend.

This is certainly not a bad game, not by a long shot. But its flaws do bear mentioning, especially since professional and amateur reviewers alike seem to be blinded by the immense hype surrounding this better-than-average title. Buy this game if you enjoy senseless sci-fi violence and don't require a lot of depth to your gaming experiences. Otherwise you're better off renting.

  • This game rocks!
If you are a FPS fan...welcome to the current Holy Grail. This is quite simply the best game of its type bar none. Fabulous graphics with well rendered scenery combine with a great story to immurse you into what is the closest thing to an interactive movie experience currently available. Videos and story scripting are so well crafted that you sometimes almost forget you are playing a game. Clearly, this is what Starship Troopers should have been with a little essence of Aliens and Doom mixed in for good measure. The weaponry is amazing, with your primary piece being a cross between the Aliens pulse rifle with an...I love this...attached large toothed chain saw device for close combat. Kudos to whoever was responsible for that one. The only bad aspect about this game will be you inability to put it down. New control features are lifelike and enjoyable. No more spending your time looking for health laying about. Just mind your damage meter (yes, there is one) and duck behind cover for a short while to heal yourself. Extremely fun as a co-op game, you'll need to cover each other's backs through the intense levels. Through most of the game you are part of a squad of four soldiers and whether you are playing co-op or solo, your two or three AI teamates perform in a smart and realistic way unlike anything seen before...to an extent that you will find yourself almost forgetting that they are AI all together. And as if all this weren't enough, GOW is the first installment of a trilogy. HOOOAH!

  • A balanced, unbiased review
Well, after playing GoW for about an hour, I have to say this game SUCKS! Where can I start? First of all, I failed to mention above the reason why I only played an hour: I nodded off and awoke with slobber running down my chin...

Here's an unbiased overview of the game and its inner workings:

Stunning Graphics? Well if you like monotones, I guess& The characters were not what I would call vivid or realistic; environments definitely did not look like real environments. In addition on my set I had a squashed aspect ratio that made the game just look crappy.

No health meter& This is simple, Ive been playing FPSs for years, it appears this games developer is on an island, and totally forgot to include one. Somebody send a rescue helicopter to get these guys and bring them back to reality!

A.I. problems: Well to make a long story short, these guys are stupid, they die constantly (Dom comes to mind), or should I call him Dumb? Seems to fit better!

Controls& you knew I was getting to that didnt you? Well wait no more, the controls in this game suck, I had to keep zooming in to really do any damage to enemies, which left me vulnerable to attacks. Of course with no health meter& you know where Im going right? One word sum up: SUCKS.

Well, going back to me nodding off, it was some good sleep, if youre looking for an alternative to sleeping pills, look no further and purchase this game.

If your looking for a compelling, FPS, check out some really good games like Resident Evil 4 or Resistance: Fall of Man.
