LifeSavers is a traditional American brand of hard candy. The ring shaped candies are packaged in rolls of about 15 pieces. LifeSavers was a subsidiary of Kraft Foods before being purchased by the Wrigley Company in 2004. Lifesavers were first created in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland chocolatier. The candy got its name due to its resemblance to a life preserver, an effect which was accidental, produced by a defect in the machine used to produce the first batch of the candy. It has been claimed that if you were to choke on this candy, the hole in the middle would allow air to pass through, thereby essentially saving the choker's life, though this probably would not actually make a difference, if only because pressure would turn the candy sideways. Wint-O-green LifeSavers are known for their ability to spark when bitten in a dark room, due to triboluminescence produced by an electrical charge produced by grinding wintergreen and sugar together.
