Few bands are better suited than the Barenaked Ladies to take obnoxious old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level of obnoxiousness. The Canadian pop group does a smack-up job on this generous collection, where they tackle children's relics like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," curious seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas," and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals that share the bookish humor of the band's hits like "One Week" and "Brian Wilson." Even the inclusion of three Hannukah songs doesn't raise the bar for reverence. The disc also includes collaborations with Sarah McLachlan and Michael Buble. --Aidin Vaziri Barenaked Ladies celebrate the holiday season with their ninth major release, Barenaked For The Holidays. This release features many holiday favorites, including "Do They Know It's Christ- mas"(written by Bob Geldof )and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," performed with Sarah McLachlan, and seven original tracks including BNL's new holiday single "Elf 's Lament," featuring Michael Bublé. Customer Reviews:
A very fun CD I really can't understand some of the complaints about this CD. The Christmas season is supposed to be joyous and all some people want to do is whine because a few of the songs here sound like they were played on a $20 organ you give the kids when their 9 years old. They probably were, and isn't that irreverent look at life part of the BNL oeuvre? I think this CD is exactly what is was supposed to be: fun. They do some of the old standards, but find a way to do them differently. The first track, Jingle Bells, starts out so slow it sounds like a funeral dirge and I was shaking my head, but then it suddenly speeds up to its normal tempo and then they throw in old kid's verse "batman smells . . ." Sarah McLachlan sings with them on a jazzed up God Rest Ye Merry Gentlmen and its one of the best versions of that song I've ever heard. One of their original songs is Elf's Lament about strong-arming Santa for better working conditions. For me this CD is a great combination of fun, silly songs and relevant ones done in a respectful manner, but all of them reflect the BNL style. --2006-12-15A refreshing change A very delightful, refreshing, and entertaining change of pace from so many of the overdone holiday standards. --2006-02-25Returned Item Item was sent to me that was supposed to be brand new and instead was used and in unacceptable codition. The money has been already credited back to me. I will never again purchase through amazon. This was my first and will be my last experience. --2006-01-31Funky and Fun... Some of these songs just make me laugh. If you're a BNL fan, I think you'll truly appreciate their antics on this album. If you're looking for traditional holiday favorites, you won't find them here. If you're sick to death of the traditional holiday favorites and want something that'll put a smile on your face, I suggest giving this one a shot. --2006-01-30A mix of good and wierd I thought the song w/ Sarah McLaughlin was great - my favorite x-mas song of the season. Other songs I would drop off the CD. But it does get you in the mood for the holidays. --2006-01-16
