  • When a chef chooses a knife for slicing strawberries, chances are that the selection differs greatly from the optimal blade for dicing an onion. The large blade on a chef's knife, while quite efficient cutting onions, would squash the juicy, petite berries. Likewise, a paring knife adeptly slices small, soft ingredients, but makes rather an ineffective blade for chopping onions, potatoes, and other hardier foods. To handle all cutting chores, KitchenAid offers their Cook's Series 16-piece Cutlery Set. The set consists of an 8-inch chef's knife, an 8-inch slicing knife, an 8-inch bread knife, a 5-1/2-inch utility knife, a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, eight steak knives, kitchen shears, a knife sharpener, and a traditional storage block. A fantastic gift for a pair of newlyweds or a recent college graduate, the quality knife set provides a high caliber cutlery collection for decades of use.

KitchenAid forged the knives in sturdy high-carbon stainless steel to resist stains, rust, and corrosion. Soft blade backs and the extra-sharp cutting edges enhance user control and capability. Full tang construction, fully enclosed in the knives' DuPont Delrin handles, ensures balance and durability. For user comfort, the shatterproof acetal resin handles feature ergonomic contoured grips and brushed stainless-steel end caps. The knives store in the natural wood block. Though dishwasher- safe, KitchenAid recommends washing knives by hand. Knives should be cleaned immediately following contact with acidic foods like mustard to avoid tarnish. Made in China, a one-year hassle-free replacement warranty covers the set. The knife block measures 6 by 8 by 7 inches. Upon shipping, the full set measures 11-4/5 by 4-3/5 by 12-4/5 inches and weighs 10 pounds.

  • Better than expected: 19Dec2006
I ordered the KitchenAid KA1PB16N Cutlery set ($45) to replace a really cheap set in a rental property. I have an (expensive) J. A. Henckels cutlery set at home. I was very surprised to receive the KitchenAid set, and see that is was actually better in quality than my Henckels knife set. Its really a great knife set and very well made. Anyone looking for a high-price brand name knife set should consider this set as a much less expensive option.

  • Not What I Ordered
Twice now, Amazon has sent me the "Contemporary" knife set when the "Traditional" knife set was ordered. The picture and the item # both denote the "Traditional" knife block. My first order was placed on Dec. 1st so that I would have the item in time for Christmas. Here it is 1 week before Christmas and I still don't have what I ordered. I was told by Amazon customer service that they would credit my acct. and then I could re-order what I wanted. I ordered what I wanted the first time!! But they aren't sending me the item that I ordered. I'm sure that the contemporary set is just fine, but it's not what I wanted to give my sister for Christmas. Now I'm stuck with out a gift and a bad taste in my mouth towards Amazon. I've learned my lesson!!!

  • Better than the picture
Be sure to note that the picture is totally incorrect, but that's a good thing. The cutlery is as pictured, but the block has been redesigned into a slimmer and taller piece, which for me was a lot better. You counter space is not threatened this way. The handles appear to be kind of a cheap plastic (reason for subtracting a star), but the blades all look high quality and there is a sharpener included in case they get dull, and unlike the red handled set, these are dishwasher safe. So if you are looking for a $50 set of knives, this is recommended as a good replacement set, or a nice wedding gift for a young couple.
