Elf is genuinely good. Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (Swingers) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, Elf feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. --Bret Fetzer This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity. Customer Reviews:
Just what you need to get in the holiday mood Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, a human child who mistakenly slips into Santa's bag one year and is taken back to the north pole. Raised by one of the older elves, Buddy has no idea that he is actually human until he overhears some of the other elves talking in reference to his decreased productivity at toy-making when compared to the other elves (he builds 85 Etch-a-Sketches an hour while the genuine elves can build a thousand). Buddy decides to go back to his roots and find his human relatives, but is distraught when he's told that his real father is on Santa's naughty list. Still, he sails off on an iceberg from the North Pole bound for New York City.
Elf is hilarious as only Will Ferrell movies can be. When Buddy finds a department store Santa Clause pretending to be the real deal he tells him, "You sit on a throne of lies." This movie is full of great one liners and watching it is a great way to get in the mood for the holiday season. I'd highly recommend it as a funnier alternative to some of the old classics like Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story, or simply to supplement your holiday movie library. --2006-12-17Really enjoyed this one! I thought this was a great, lighthearted, funny movie. Will Ferrell was perfect for the role of Buddy the Elf. I love when he answers the phone and says, "Buddy the elf, what's your favorite color?" and all of his facial expressions... :) --2006-12-15A ***Huge*** Disappointment Incredibly overrated.
Lame.
Boring.
A huge disappointment.
Painful to sit through just a bit of it.
Not funny at all.
Should I say what I really think about it?
Just my opinion, I realize; but, IMHO, watching this movie is a waste of time, life, money, oxygen, space, etc.
An intriguing plot line that, unfortunately, goes nowhere....Repeat, absolutely nowhere.
So sad....
I must confess that I am not 100% honest in my review...I actually feel the movie deserves no stars, or negative stars. Unfortunately, that is not an option here at Amazon.
--2006-12-13I can sum this movie in one word.... Garbage!
End of Story.
--2006-12-13Definitely a new holiday classic! My husband and I FINALLY saw this movie this weekend, and it is WONDERFUL!!
Will Ferrell is amazing in playing the part of "Buddy"! I love how he is able to capture the innocence and joyfullness of how an elf sheltered from the world would be. You will fall in love with Buddy!
This is definitely a new holiday tradition for us, as we will watch it every Christmas from now on. I wish that we would've gotten it sooner! I highly recommend this movie to EVERYONE! It's a true hit...full of laughs, love, joy, and holiday cheer! --2006-11-28
