Not very good.

I love Kraftwerk. If it wasn't for Kraftwerk, many of my favorite bands would never exist. Kraftwerk also did some incredibly excellent music...25 years ago. But even "Electric Cafe" is WAY WAY better than Tour De France. There are basically no good songs on this album. Why there are 65 different versions of the same song, I'll never know. I guess they must have run out of ideas. I just cannot get into this, it doesn't sound like anything Kraftwerk has ever done before, and not in a good way at all. Everything sounds the same, there's no traditional "Kraftwerk" sound, it all sounds so over-processed and bland. I couldn't believe that this was the same band that made such masterpieces as "Radioactivity", and "Trans Europe Express" the first time I heard this. In all truth, I haven't even listened to the album in it's entirety because I got too bored of it. I guess in their almost 20 year absence, somewhere along the way they ran out of money or something, and decided to whip this album up on hopes that it would generate some revenue from loyal fans, which I'm sure it did. I'm thankful for the abundance of good Kraftwerk material from back in the day, but I think it may be time to call it quits.
A seriously addictive work-out...

Innovators from the far left out-field who've managed to keep up there with the best for 30 years, Kraftwerk are a unique and often bizarre proposition. And here's another example why... take a fairly odd idea - "musical to cycle to" - put it through 11 iterations, stand back and see what happens. First off is their 1983 "Tour de France (CD Single)" featuring three excellent interpretations of their ridiculously catchy original tune, including some quite wonderfully integrated sound bytes of heavy breathing and buzzing derailleur gears. Then 20 years later there's this, their "Tour de France Soundtracks" album with its superb first three tracks (Tour de France Etapes 1, 2 & 3) which while some way away from their predecessors pick up on several of their chord sequences to become perfectly complementary, equally irresistible extensions of them, followed by it's final track, titled - yes you've guessed it - "Tour de France", that's a further excellent reworking of the original concept. And then, if that's not enough, mix it all up even more with their "Tour de France 03 (CD Single)" featuring four more, subtly different, versions of the first three tracks from the "Soundtracks" album.
Too much I hear you say... well possibly not. As you may by now suspect these guys are dedicated "velo-men" who know a bit about how to keep your legs turning, and if you put the whole 11 tracks together and hit the "shuffle" button you'll see why because you've got just about the best possible accompaniment to a serious blast on the pedals. A mesmerically addictive, wholly harmonious sequence of brain etchingly good back-beats & chord sequences that'll keep you cycling, jogging, driving or just chilling out for almost an hour before hitting, as you will, the replay button. And if you're not convinced, buy any one of these superb records for starters and then see if you can resist getting the rest.
One of the best electronica albums in 2003
2005-07-28
The first 4 or 5 tracks of this CD could easily be one long composition-- a seemless flow of mind-bending electronica. This is what, for me, makes this disk stand out from other Kraftwerk albums: there is a fluidity to most of the songs that generally Kraftwerk only saves for its very best. Or perhaps I like the less 'square' songs in their vocabulary. This is one disk the sits well with me. And given the options in 2003, this stands out as one of the best strict electronica offerings of the year. As much of electronica during this period focused on a more loungey sound, Kraftwerk displays untapped horizons in the more electronic arena.
Fantastich, wunderwall, erstaunlich !

What a pleasant suprise. I resisted it for so long, but it's really top-notch Kraftwerk. At times majestic, then humorous and always sublime - the things that make Kraftwerk work.
Smart in the way Computer World is. Buy this one now.
The return of Kraftwerk.

Tour de France Soundtracks (2003) marks the studio return of Kraftwerk. The band renuites to work on a series of instrumental tracks for the Tour de France, sort of a concept album involving the world's most celebrated (and grueling) cycling extravaganza. No new ground covered here, just some cool music with some funky beats that'll keep you moving. Hopefully the band will come out with another album. The world misses your music. Cd comes with a booklet with graphics and lyrics.
Highly recommended for Kraftwerk fans.
