All equids, including horses, began their evolution in North America. Free ranging wild horses existed throughout North America until at least the end of the Pleistocene Epoch (8000 years ago). Many believe that when early Spanish explorers accidentally released wild horses to the continent in the early 1500s, they had returned an American original. El Caballo documents one of the most complex current wildlife management issues in North America. Today, the remnants of the escaped Spanish horses are scattered in small herds across the American West. These horses are protected by the 1971 Free-Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act, but current government policy towards the horses is a mixed bag. Thousands are removed from public lands each year to reduce competition between horses and domestic livestock. El Caballo asks fundamental questions about the human relationship with wildlife species. What constitutes a native species? An exotic? Feral? Where do modern wild horses (Equus cabalus) fit in our view of the natural world?
