  • Manufacturer: McAfee
  • Mediocre Product Over-promises and Under-delivers 2004-03-29 I used Spamkiller for three months before I uninstalled it. I found that it let about 20% of spam through to the MS Outlook inbox, and failed frequently to even show this spam as "Live Mail". I would frequently wind up dowloading unexpected spam in MS Outlook, even with Spamkiller turned on. Also, I found the "retrieve text" e-mail preview feature to work erratically, sometimes hanging with the mail server. As for sending those seemingly clever "recipient not found" replies to spam originators, I noticed no difference in the volume of spam being sent to me whether I used this or not. I pulled the product off my computer when I began having other problems after installing McAfee VirusScan v8, which is a whole 'nother can of worms. I doubt that I will ever re-install it.
Pretty good 2003-10-31 Spamkiller 4 does a pretty good job of catching spam. It's easy to rescue a message if it's accidentally put in the Killed folder, and it's easy to create a new filter if a spam isn't caught so you don't get it again. There's a handy icon in the system tray that shows when there's new email. This is a stand-alone program. If you are thinking about getting SpamKiller 5 or Norton AntiSpam (which integrate with your email program) be sure to read the reviews first!
Never worked properly 2003-10-13 I wasted over eight hours trying to get this software to work properly. It frezzes up on certain spam, typically large emails. I sent an email to McAfee which was unanswered. It is MUCH easier to manually delete my own spam. I removed this software from my system and use Outlook filters only. A waste of money.
Spamkiller 2003-10-07 Spamkiller has been very unstable. I've reinstalled it over 20 times, because it stops loading after a while. Also, it no longer is importing my Outlook addresses. The tech support chat is not much help.
This would make good freeware 2003-09-26 This is the type of product that makes you scratch your head wondering whether it was worth the purchase or not. It really doesn't add much beyond the normal filtering capabilities of MS Outlook or Outlook Express. You have to invest the time to set up rules for filtering in order to make it halfway decent. There's nothing to distinguish it from the plethora of other anti-spam software out there.

McAfee recently purchased the rights to a competing anti-spam product, which many feel is a superior product (Spam Assassin). Hopefully they will use the technology to improve on Spamkiller in the future.
