  • Great for my use 2005-11-03 I'm a industrial mechanic and I do a good amount of fabricating. Including a lot of drilling and tapping. Even through "AR" these bits do very well. With low speed and cutting fluid I get much life out of these. I have had no success with sharpening these bits. Once the surface is worn or damaged the bit is trash. Turn your torque down on smaller bits. They will break fairly easy.

For the price and what I use them for "5 stars". For a machine shop "1 star". It all comes down to what you need and how much you want to spend. I just bought a second set for the shop at work.
Do not buy these bits! 2005-09-22 I got this "too good to be true" set of bits last month and it is back where it came from. From the sounds of it I am not the only one who got a bent out of shape and broken cheap box with these crappy bits. If I could I would give this product 0 stars but it only goes down to 1 star. Please do not be fooled by the price... it is not worth it.
Cobalt SmoBalt 2005-06-27 Boys, Boys, Boys.... I build horse trailers for a living and I drill more steel in a day than most of you do in a year! I can't stand buy and let arm chair computer geeks comment over something that has little to do with the product. Do you actually own this set? Well I own 6 sets for our business and for the cost of these things they are one hell of a deal. I don't care what they callem, what color they are or how they might smell!. its all marketing any way. The description says M2 steel which is what it is. What did you expect for $59.99, an M42 cobalt set valued at over a thousand dollars? I suppose you think that 6.5hp shop vac in your shop is actually 6.5HP dont you......come on wake up! Bottom line is where am I gonna get a 115pc M2 high speed steel drill bit set of this quality for 59.99?..........that's what I thought!
Proves P T Barnum's point 2005-04-21 "There's a sucker born every minute," he said -- and there are obviously plenty of knaves ready to reel him in.

These Chinese bits are apparently NOT cobalt alloy steel as the title claims, but only the cheaper high-speed steel with some sort of colorful plating that increases the durability of the cutting edge not one whit. The description, particularly the phrase "More durable than M2 high speed bits", seems carefully crafted to obscure that fact.
Standard cobalt-alloy bits (M42 alloy if memory serves) have been a common item in machine shops for at least fifty years, for good reason. SOLID cobalt alloy is tougher, harder, and more heat-resistant than M2 high-speed steel alloy, which itself is more heat-resistant than carbon steel.
Even carbon steel is just fine for most woodworking bits. The advantage of cobalt alloy is most evident when working tough alloys like titanium and some stainless steels. A good M42 bit will even drill case-hardened steel vault doors that standard M2 bits won't begin to cut. The primary function of platings on the bit is to reduce friction along the drill flutes, just as cutting oil and wax do. Their secondary function has evidently become the attraction of ill-informed customers, just as shiny objects will attract fish (and some girls).
Offshore Tools 2005-02-21 I truly appreciate the comments on this drill set. I've decided not to order the 115 pc. set. I must question my judgement for having considered this set. The value of any coating is lost immediately when the bit is sharpened and a such seem ill-suited for anything but casual, homeowner use. Quality control seems to be lacking as drills are out-of-round, the drill point angle is uneven, etc. The drill point angle can be corrected but there goes any perceived advantage of a coating. Never mind drill point angle and coatings...an out-of-round drill bit is worse than no bit. In closing, two things come to mind. #1 is, "you get what you pay for". #2 is, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Thanks to the reviewers.
