  • One of Winston's Best. Great Winter Tour Through "December." 2005-11-30 This collection has been around for a couple of decades now, originally on vinyl, and now on CD. This really is a trip through "December." Let me tell you why I believe so:

"Thanksgiving" is an appropriate track to start and acts as a segue from the end of November to early "December." Winston continues with his variation on a traditional "Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head." His slightly reverbed "concert hall" sound is perfect for the still emptiness many of us think of in a December landscape. You may not recognize Bach's "Joy" for the first 20 seconds or so, but the melody starts in under Winston's gentle hands and takes delightful form in this arrangement. Without sounding too sappy (because I'm a pretty tough guy!), it's as though he added swirling snowflakes. Sorry, that's the best way to describe this enjoyable track. His short, minimal "Prelude" gives us more winter pause before moving on to a memorable Winston arrangement of "Carol of the Bells," one of the best tracks on this CD. Next, we have a three part piano suite, "Night." Part One, "Snow," reprises a techical theme we've become familiar with by now - aural snow, with a serious undertone. Part Tow, "Midnight," is a deliberate, "bell-like" piece. Part Three, "Minstrels," draws you into the music box experience of a Christmas group approaching as they perform a round, at first distant, then louder - beautiful - then fading into the dark, winter night, on to the next listener. The keystone of this CD for me is Winston's arrangement of Pachelbel's "Kanon" This arrangement crescendo from simplicity into a spirit-rending power that can make your eyes sting if you let it. "The Holly and the Ivy" is another traditonal work that Winston has re-presented into a joyous seasonal expression. You feel the sun come out. Then before things get to rambunctious, Winston slows us down again with the bell-like "Some Children See Him." And, finally, we conclude our trip through "December" with "Peace." I see this as a positive, crystalline moment at the end of the season. And affirmative ending to one of the best thematic instrumental CDs out there.
For The Piano Lover ! 2005-08-07 Oh, Wow!
This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy George Winston, Mehdi, Danny Wright, Keiko Matsui, or even David lanz. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed!
It reminds me somewhat of Kevin Kern, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: Mehdi ~ Instrumental Heaven Volume 7 ..Truly a Gem...Samples are at SoothingMusic,Com...Just Listen.
Close your eye and dream.... 2005-01-19 Put on this CD.... stoke up the fire.... get your cup of tea.... turn down the lights....close your eyes.

The sound of a solo piano is just so intimate. George Winston can take you on a relaxing ride through a starry night over the snow, all bundled up and warm. The music evokes a sense of peace and soothing pleasure. It's so simple, and so perfectly melodic and in tune. This is a "Christmas" album that you can play all year round, whenever you need to relax, clear your mind and unwind.
