Although billed as "100% Crude Fun," the Oilman game is much more refined. Oilman is played on a compact, multilevel board, and no game can be played the same way twice. Players begin by shaking the box (which features a shelf to hold all the game pieces) to distribute the "oilfield deposit" barrier pieces beneath the world map fastened to the box. Players then bid on properties formed by drawing boundaries around up to nine adjoining peg holes, both on land and offshore. Players can increase their salaries by drilling in any of their wells with one of the hole-punching rigs of three different lengths. Drilling deeper costs more, but pays better if you hit "wet." But be careful--gambling money to redrill to a lower level a well that's been shown to be dry at a higher level might just bankrupt you faster than you can say "OPEC." From Alberta to Abilene, Abu Dhabi to Azerbaijan, the Oilman game is more suspenseful and chancy than any "rigged" game has a right to be. --Tony Mason
