I am not sure how to really classify this movie. It is not one of my favorites. I have never "experienced" it with a live audience, as so many reviewers have. I loved the movie at some parts, hated it in others. It was alternately brilliant, or disgusting and sick. It made me laugh, but also to seriously consider not finishing the DVD. I thought since the movie was thirty years old, it would not be considered raunchy by today's standard. I was wrong. It is so nasty and gross that it crosses the line. Why people would take delight in seeing this movie over and over is beyond me.
The story is about a young couple named Brad and Janet (Susan Sarandon), presumably in the 1950's, who get engaged after attending a friend's wedding. In their elation, says the Masterpiece Theatre-type narrator, they drove in a storm and got a flat. They end up at a Frankenstein-type castle owned by the bisexual transvestite Dr. Frank-n-Furter (Tim Curry). Soon, things get wild and crazy.
Dr. Frank unveils his creation, a muscular mute named Rocky Horror. They go into the "bridal chamber." Gross! Dr. Frank is not content with Rocky. He also sets his sights on the young couple.
You can't help singing and dancing to some of the songs, just because of the exuberance of Tim Curry and his strange crew. Everyone in the film threw their heart and soul into it. My favorite character was Magenta, Dr. Frank N. Furter's head maid. The guy who did Riff Raff was alarmingly tall and thin, perfect for the role as head butler, and I loved his creepy voice.
Disgusting - well, let's try cannibalism, Tim Curry being obscene on a pommel horse, and everyone - even an old man in a wheelchair - in a corset, garters, fishnets, and heels.
Some of the dialouge is thought-provoking, and the very last shot of the film is excellent. But even after all the sick stuff, the end is sad! So this film basically sickened me.
People who see this film over and over must really enjoy drugs and molesting anything that moves.
A midnight cult classic that's not without flaws.

It's hard to believe that when THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW was first released in 1975, it was being shown as a regular feature with daytime shows. I can hardly imagine this a Saturday matinee for even one week's time.
Thank goodness for Greenwich Village's WAVERLY THEATER that started the midnight cult phenomenon that has been legendary for 30 years. This movie was actually partially responsible for making New York City theaters like THE WAVERLY and the 8TH STREET PLAYHOUSE famous.
So with a reputation like that, it would seem that ROCKY HORROR is damn near flawless. But as a pure film, without the fun of the audience participation, that's not so. The first half nearly jumps out of its socks with excitement and music. By the time you're into the latter half, it has slowed to an almost comatose level. Even the songs have lost their edge by then.
But for its flaws, it's timeless fun to be watched over and over again, even if it's only on your TV.
Awesome!!!!
