An overview on the military genius of Robert E. Lee
2002-11-24
This 30-minute documentary on Robert E. Lee as part of The Civil War Legends series is more of an analysis of his military career than a standard biography. Narrated by Pulitzer Prize winning historian James McPherson, this documentary looks at Lee's military background and his battlefield tactics using period photography and illustrations along with contemporary visits to the pivotal battlefield where Lee's Army of Northern Virginia fought, such as Gettysburg. The result is not a detailed account of Lee's military genius, but rather a generalized understanding of his strengths (and weaknesses) as a battlefield general. Because of its emphasis on the politics of the Civil War the volume in this series on Abraham Lincoln is probably the most useful for classroom use, but this look at Robert E. Lee does give a sense of why he remains the most idolized military commander in American history. The two other volumes in the series look at Stonewall Jackson and U.S. Grant.
