A Town Like Alice

Also waiting for the DVD! 2005-08-11 The VHS mini-series A Town Like Alice was so very well made! The story has great emotional depth, and the actors are perfectly cast. It's one of those mini-series like Lonesome Dove that you'll want to see again and again just to "visit" the characters for a spell. The book is a real pleasure to read, too. As stated by others here, I'm also waiting for the DVD.

Where is the DVD?! 2005-05-20 Please! This compelling story MUST be on DVD, and soon. One of the most romantic, fascinating stories I've ever seen. Snuggle up with your sweetie for a couple of nights and watch the plot unfold. You'll never forget it.

Brilliant 2004-12-12 You will never see a better love story! A Nevil Shute masterpiece. Saw it originally on PBS as a mini series. Waited for years to get it on VHS. Really want it on DVD.

re Mr Greenbaum's comments 2004-02-20 I have loved this movie for a long long time, ever since it was first shown on TV as a miniseries (in Australia). I think all the previous reviews are accurate, except Mr Greenbaum's comment that the scene where Joe Harmon chastises Jean about going into the Pub is not really necessary. I can only presume that Mr Greenbaum is not Australian; if he was, he would know only too well that even until about the late 1960's, no decent female would even think of entering the public bar of a Pub; that was forbidden; if a woman wanted to have a drink in a pub, she went to the "Ladies Lounge". I was born in 1954 and even though things have changed dramatically since then, I still am not confortable being in the public bar of a pub. So, I think that scene is very true and accurate for the times and a man would have spoken severely to his wife/girlfriend for going into that part of a pub.

Again, this is a wonderful move and I can only hope it is soon released on DVD as my VHS copy is damaged and VHS copies are no longer available in Australia.
