Must-see for LaPaglia fans
2004-10-11
This isn't the most original plot in the world, but it's definitely a sweet and touching tale nonetheless. The beautiful visuals highlight LaPaglia's tender performance of a shy, quiet priest trying to get by during WWII. In particular, this is a showcase of LaPaglia's wonderful array of sad-eyed expressions, puppy-dog guilty looks, and heart-grabbing sighs. If you dig LaPaglia in emotional settings, you will definitely want to see this movie.
The other acting is also quite good.
The "Italian" accents aren't always top-notch and I would have preferred the movie to not have used accents in that way at all, but it's a minor complaint.
It was almost six weeks ago that I watched the movie, and I still think about it every day - it moved me that much.
Emotional acting, strong story
2002-06-20
Anthony LaPaglia plays a quiet, humble priest during the Nazi occupation of a small Italian village. His emotions are torn between service to God and love for a beautiful parishioner. His participation in a resistance mission leads him into danger. He believes he is a coward. (true heroes never believe they are heroes) I watched Anthony LaPaglia talk about acting on Larry King a year ago. He stated that acting can transcend. His belief shows in this movie. Powerful, emotional acting from LaPaglia and Embeth Davidtz. A strong, well-crafted story as well.
Very Good!
