  • You know exactly what you're getting in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis and Roseanne star Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and followed by National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation (1997). Directed by Jeremiah Chechik, who went on to do Benny & Joon and the Sharon Stone remake of Diabolique. --Jim Emerson

    Customer Reviews:
  • Love this movie!
Even though they run it on regular TV every year, the original with all the off color humor can't be beat. It's a family tradition in our house. A great, great movie with a great message.

  • Clark, Is Your House on Fire?
What can I say? I never get tired of this one!

    1. My husband cracks up at the sledding scene every time!

    2. Chevy Chase punching the plastic reindeer must be a guy thing because my husband punches things whenever he gets frustrated.

    3. I never get tired of Cousin Eddie and Uncle Louis and Aunt Bethany!

    4. If anyone is interested, here are two websites for the moose mugs. [...] The Canadian moose mugs are pricey but the melkmugs are around $[...] each and you get a discount if you buy more than one.

  • To much swearing for a Christmas movie.
I have seen this movie a number of times on TV and thought it was funny. However, the DVD has to much swearing. I do not think they left any swear words out. My family and I will not watch the DVD again.

  • A Very Funny Christmas Comedy!
Now, while I think this film is great, I am still a bit partial to the first "Vacation" film. That one still makes me laugh. However, this Chevey Chase film was very, very funny too! Part of this lay in the fact that the ensemble character actors of the film were great to watch, and as always, Cousin Eddy (Randy Quaid) was the standout. I am not much of a Chevy Chase fan, as I find most of his comedy to be dry. Having written this, I will say however, that he did an excellent job in this film: As a frustrated employee stressed out with his relatives on Christmas, this film was a complete joy to watch.

When Chase is trying to get the Christmas lights to work, [and frustrated that they won't work] I thought it was hilarious when they finally did go on, and his uptight yuppie neighbors find themselves blinded by the amount of lights being beamed into their home. However, it was the presence of Cousin Eddie that really made this film a standout to me. I always thought his character was the funniest one in ALL of the Vacation films he was in. [By the way: I only liked this one and the first one of the Vacation films however]. Anyway, this film is funny, and highly recommended. It is deserving of its five-star rating. A very funny film.
